Risk Assessment School Nigeria

The Risk Assessment Summer School II (RASS II) organized by AIIDA-4 Medical Consultants in collaboration with the
International Union of Toxicology and NAFDAC held between the 23rd and 30th of May 2010. The course was designed to train participants on Chemical Risk Assessment. Participants were from government agencies like Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Nigeria Environmental Standard Regulations Agency (NESREA), National Agency for Foodand Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), industries (Pharmaceuticals, Food and Chemicals), and Toxicologists in academia.
The school was tailored to train regulatory personnel from these organizations and help increase their knowledge and experience in the field of chemical risk assessment; and better understand the data evaluation process. At the end of the course, participants were able to critically evaluate available information on chemicals, identify data gaps and present qualitative and quantitative statements about the risk to humans, of exposure to chemicals and inform decisions on how various chemicals can be used in an acceptable way. Learning was supported by tutored small group discussions, group work and group presentations. Each group was mentored by a faculty member. The Faculty was composed of 4 persons from reputable institutions in the USA e.g.Harvard University, University of Washington, Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) and African Society for Toxicology Sciences (ASTS).
